Episode 17: Trauma, PTSD, and Nurturing Yourself w/ Cristina Mardirossian & Mia Hemstad

March 4, 2021

Show Notes

“Two people can go though the exact same trauma and how they deal with it and manage it can be completely different” - Cristina Mardirossian, LMFT

Beyond the stereotypical image of an army vet suddenly bursting into a violent episode many resort to when thinking of PTSD, the people who suffer from this mental illness caused by trauma experience a mix of symptoms that challenge this narrative. But, what is trauma anyways and how can someone heal?

On this episode of Students of Mind, Jayde invites Pasadena trauma-based therapist, Cristina Mardirossian, to educate us on what trauma really is and how it can develop into PTSD, the therapeutic model and modalities that she and other trauma-informed practitioners use to treat their patients, some differences between traditional talk therapy and trauma-based care, and she debunks some common myths about PTSD and trauma as a whole.

After Cristina provides a trauma and PTSD crash course, Jayde sits down with Mia Hemstad, a trauma survivor and self-care coach, to talk about what it's like to live with PTSD and other mental illnesses.. Mia shares the details of her healing journey and the experiences she’s had with different therapies and medication, her learnings throughout this journey, what it’s like being a mom while living with mental illness, and how she’s using her lived experiences to help others cope with their symptoms through self-care.
