Show Notes

On this episode of Students of Mind we revisit a conversation with Wanjiko and Jordyn from Episode 27: Navigating Body Image and Mental Health as a Black Woman in PWI. Our host Jayde includes a snippet from that initial interview that uncovers some of the unnerving realities of growing up as a Black girl at a PWI.

Jayde, Wanjiko, and Jordyn discuss the experience of physically developing into a Woman and the anxieties that came along with that–from wanting to remain small, be perceived as young, and not fitting the beauty standard, to being over sexualized. They also discussed what it was like dating and interacting with boys as Black girls at a predominantly white institution. Throughout the discussion the group also calls out underlying causes and influences that may have dictated their experiences including the media and the need to feel safe.
