Episode 5: Rest as a Healing Practice for Black and Indigenous People w/ The Black Dream Escape

July 23, 2020

Show Notes

What if we told you that rest is an act of resistance and radical self-care? On today’s episode, we sit down with Onika Reigns of Black Dream Escape to talk about the rest and sleep practices of Black and Indigenous people.

Onika is part of an effort to develop a new psychological theory that questions whether talk therapy is always the way to help Black and Indigenous people. She argues that rest is the answer–especially when we consider that forms of sleep deprivation have been a way to oppress marginalized communities. Through a harm reduction lens, we discuss how Black and Indigenous people can reclaim rest practices and even get in touch with how our ancestors rested (i.e humming, breathing, braiding).

Join us in our discussion of radical rest.
